Laut des Krankenhaus-Infektions-Surveillance-Systems (KISS) von 2003 sind Pneumonien die häufigste nosokomiale Infektion in Deutschland mit einer price von 48%.
Das Risiko an einer Pneumonie zu erkranken steigt erheblich an, wenn der sufferer maschinell beatmet wird.

In der Pflege werden jedoch verschiedenste Mundpflegeartikel benutzt und Mundpflegemaßnahmen durchgeführt, in manchen Kliniken gibt es Leitlinien, nach denen die Mitarbeiter verfahren sollen, in anderen führt sie jeder einzelne nach bestem Gewissen durch.
Im Rahmen einer evidenzbasierten Pflege müssen wissenschaftlich fundierte Aussagen zur Verfügung stehen, die Pflegekräften die Möglichkeit gibt, aktiv nosokomiale Pneumonien zu verhindern.
